A Message from the Rev. Dr. John J. Carey Pastor Immanuel Presbyterian Church |
|
Thank you for inquiring about Immanuel Presbyterian Church. We are a progressive congregation, located in East Anchorage, and are a part of the Presbytery of the Yukon. We have about 60 members, and another group of about 20-25 friends who participate in church life. We have a warm sense of community, and are committed to outreach and mission work. By “Progressive”, we mean that we take the Bible seriously but not literally. We respect all faiths which help people develop a sense of the Divine, but in our educational programs we also want to deepen our sense of the Christian tradition. We are inclusive in our membership policies, and welcome all persons who want to be a part of our community. We are committed to the Peace Movement and to all efforts for social justice. We have an adult forum which meets at 9:45 a.m. on Sunday, and which explores new issues in theology and culture. We are active with the Interfaith Council and other ecumenical activities. We do not repeat ancient creeds, but profess our faith with contemporary statements of faith. Our worship themes are patterned around the rhythms of the liturgical year. ( If you do not know what that means, come and find out! ) We think that religious questions are more important that old answers. One nice feature of our community is that each Sunday following worship we gather in the Fellowship Hall for a light lunch with soup and snacks. We have occasional potlucks and picnics, too, but they are not so light! We are located at 2311 Pembroke Street, close to the intersection of Boniface parkway and 24th Avenue. We welcome visitors, and I would also be glad to tell you more about Immanuel if you want to call me at the church (333-5253) or at home ( 929-3465). Blessings and all good wishes, John J.
